(Funded) ongoing research projects:

I. Retail operations & goods distribution in emerging markets

Summary

The retail distribution and retail operations in emerging markets are completely different from structures in the developed markets. We study the whole supply chain with a focus on the traditional channels in megacities and how to optimally distribute them. This includes studying the problem of dealing with limited cash availability in the chain.

II. Dual sourcing inventory management

Summary

We study stochastic dual sourcing inventory management problems by taking the perspective of the entire supply chain. The focus is on supply chain optimization, supply chain coordination, policy evaluation, and parameter optimization for different policies.

III. Sustainable supply chain management

Summary

In this project, we consider sustainability in several supply chain and logistics problems. We study supply chain network design problems by explicitly considering the environmental and social impacts and develop algorithms that can solve the resulting multi-objective optimization models. Also, we develop heuristics and algorithms that can quickly and smartly match demand and supply for ride-sharing problems. We also study and develop dispatching strategies for service vehicles that reduce passengers' waiting times, CO2 emissions, and air pollution.

IV. (International) facility location

Summary

We focus on two areas: stochastic facility location models from an international perspective and facility location models that incorporate specific characteristics of (megacities in) emerging markets.

Other research projects:

Agri-food logistics & food waste

Summary

Agri-food supply chains are characterized by a very fragmented supply side, especially in emerging markets. We study how horizontal logistics collaboration can be successfully utilized in these supply chains. We also study strategies to reduce food waste within the supply chain.

E-commerce logistics & omni-channel supply chains

Summary

The world of retailing has changed dramatically after the introduction of e-commerce and the ongoing digitalization. The emerge of omni-channels raises new research questions regarding order collection, order fulfillment, and pricing strategies. We focus on the design of omni-channel networks as well smart pricing strategies in omni-channel supply chains.
