Teeth
Purpose: To compare the loudness of sound traveling through air and solids.
Material
2 craft sticks
Procedure
1. Place the end of one of the craft sticks between your teeth.
2. Gently rub your finger against the other end of the stick. You will hear a
loud rubbing sound. Discard the stick.
3. Hold the other stick in one hand, and with the fingers of your other hand
gently rub the other end of the stick. You will hear a low rubbing sound or no
sound at all.
So Now You Know
Sounds that travel through air aren't as loud as sounds that travel through
solids. Most of the noise you make when you chew is heard only by you. This is
because the sound goes through the bones in your head right to your ears, not
into the air.
