Dry Paper

Purpose
To demonstrate that even though gases cannot always be seen, they do take up space.

Materials

bucket (taller than the cup
tap water
1 paper towel
9-ounce (270-ml) clear, plastic cup

Procedure
1.
Fill the bucket ½ full with water.
2. Wad the paper towel into a ball and push it to the bottom of the cup.
3. Turn the cup upside down.  The paper wad must remain against the bottom of the cup.  Make the paper
ball a little bigger if it falls.
4. Important:  Hold the cup vertically with its mouth pointing down.  Push the cup straight down into the
bucket filled ½ full of water.
5. Important:  DO NOT TILT the glass as you lift it out of the water.
6. Remove the paper and examine it.

Results
  The paper is dry.

Why?  The glass is filled with paper and air.  The air prevents the water from entering the glass, thus keeping the paper dry. This demonstrates that air is an example of matter (material that makes up the physical things in the universe). On Earth, matter takes up space and has weight.
