Dr. Mohammad Mehedy Masud is an Associate Professor at College of Information Technology (CIT) at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). Prior to joining UAEU in January 2012, Dr. Masud worked at the University of Texas at Dallas as a Research Associate for 2 years. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from University of Texas at Dallas, USA, in December 2009.

Dr. Masud’s research interests include Big Data mining, healthcare data analytics, e-health, data stream mining and machine learning. His research also contributes to cyber security (including network security, intrusion detection, and malware detection) using machine learning and data mining. He has published more than 40 research articles in impact factor journals including IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE), Knowledge and Information Systems (KAIS) journal, and high ranked conferences including IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM). His google scholar non-self-citation count is over 900 and his current google scholar h-index is 18. His is the lead author of the book “data mining tools for malware detection” and he is also the principal inventor of a US Patent.

Within first three years of service at UAEU, he secured more than 3.9 million Dirhams (equivalent to 1.07 million $US) research grant as PI or Co-PI from different funding organizations including Information Communication Technology (ICT – A major research grant provider in the UAE) and National Research Fund (NRF – A major government funding agency in the UAE). His current projects include Big Data Mining for improving Healthcare in UAE, and Smart and Connected Health: Modeling and Analysis of the Effect of Environmental Exposure on Public Health system. Dr. Masud serves as the lead guest editor of Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and official reviewer of several prestigious journals. He also served as a member of Organizing Committee and technical program committees of several international conferences. He delivered Keynote speeches and Tutorials in many international conferences and workshops. He has been honored with a prestigious research award from UAEU for his contributions to research publication in high ranked journal.

Dr. Masud has taught a number of courses across diverse areas and levels; from entry level courses to specialization courses, from data mining and related courses to security courses. Also, He taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses, namely, Object Oriented Programming, Security Principles and Practices, Cryptographic Algorithms and Protocols, Data Structures, Senior Graduation Projects, Business Intelligence, Machine Learning, Secure Mobile Code, System Analysis Modeling and Design, and Software Security. He contributed to course and curriculum development at different levels and intensities, from content revision to complete development, from syllabus development to curriculum proposals. He developed two new courses at UAEU, namely, Business Intelligence (undergraduate) and Software Security (graduate course). He is offering another course from spring 2016, titled “Big Data Science and its Applications to Healthcare and Security”, which is also going to be offered for the first time at UAEU and is going to be completely developed by him. Dr. Masud has gained significant experience with student diversity during his service at UAEU as the students come from a diverse cultural and ethnic background. He welcomes and encourages student diversity in classroom and in the institution.

Dr. Masud is dedicated to supervision and mentoring of students for their development and excellence. He has mentored many graduate students including MS and PhD students. He is currently the supervisor of one Ph.D. and one M.S. student, and co-supervisor of two other Ph.D. students. Dr. Masud also supervised four senior projects at CIT, one of which had won the best senior project award, and also awarded as one of the top research posters at a UAEU conference. Since 2013 he mentored computer programming teams at CIT, which greatly improved their performance at the Gulf Programming Competition (GPC) in 2014 (5th place) and 2015 (5th, 8th and 9th places).

Dr. Masud is dedicated to service to College, University and the UAE community. Since 2012 he served six college committees, served as Judges at IT Marathon, Programming competitions in CIT, and in the Gulf Region. He served as the chair of IT Marathon, a major IT event in UAEU for high school students, in 2015. For his contributions to services, He received the distinguished service award at CIT, UAEU in 2014.
