 Activities

  Main Program:

   The United Arab Emirates University, represented by the Physics Dept., is an important player in the activities of IYA2009 in the United Arab Emirates. Among these activities, we can list:

                 (1) School visits

                 (2) Astronomy Photo Exhibitions

                 (3) Night Astronomy Observations

                 (4) Special Lectures: Space Astronaut + President Elect of IAU (March 25, 2009)

                 (5) 9th Gulf Astronomy Colloquium (March 28, 2009)

              (6) Al-Battani Astronomy Teachers' Workshop (March 29,2009)

    (1) Schools Visits:

  Several schools were visited by a team of faculty members from the department of Physics, and several schools came to the university to attend a series of lectures and to have hand-on experience with experiments. The table below lists the schools that have already participated in the IYA 2009's program.    

   (2) Astronomy Photo Exhibitions:

  Up to now, we have helped the organization of six astronomy photo exhibitions and more are planned in the future:

        1. College of Science, UAE University (Year long exhibition, 95 pictures)

        2. Liwa Private School (March 23 - April 02, 2009) (120 pictures)

        3. Al-Ain English Speaking School (March 30 - April 02) (42 pictures)

        4. UAE University Multaqa (March 28-29, 2009) (100 pictures)

        5. Second Physics Festival, University of Sharjah (April 07-08, 2009) (72 pictures)

        6. 10^th UAEU Research Conference (CIT, April 13-16, 2009) (80 pictures)

        7. Al-Madar International School (May 05-07, 2009) (136 pictures)

   (3) Night Astronomy Observations:

  Several astronomy night observations are scheduled (weather permitting) according to the following schedule:

            UAE University Female Campus: March 01, May 03

            UAE University Male Campus: March 02 (check pictures), May 04 (check pictures)

            Liwa Private School. Al-Ain: March 09, 2009 (check pictures)

            Dibba Al-Fujairah Secondary Education School: April 29, 2009 (check pictures)

   (4) Special Lectures: March 25, 2009

    Thanks to Prof. Hamid Al-Nuaimiy from the College of Sciences (University of Sharjah), we had the privilege to have the visit of two special scientists in the UAEU campus on March 25, 2009: the US Astronaut  Jeffrey Hoffman and the President Elect of the International Astronomical Union Prof. Robert Williams. The two gave two lectures to our students and to several high school students from Al-Ain school system. (Check pictures)

   (5) 9^th Astronomy Gulf Colloquium:

 The United Arab Emirates University hosted the 9th Gulf Astronomy Colloquium on March 28, 2009. It was an occasion for professional and amateur astronomers from the Gulf states to meet and exchange ideas about their work and the activities of the International Year of Astronomy 2009.     (6) Al-Battani Astronomy Teachers' Workshop:

    In line with the Galileo Teacher Training Program, we have organized a workshop for the teachers under the title "Al-Battani Astronomy Teachers' Workshop" on March 29, 2009.
